I was thinking you should also look into the libraries, Pepe's Pizza (and the pizza in general), Louis Lunch (where the hamburger may or may not have been invented), Toad's Place (a concert venue/club with a bunch of history).
A couple of historical tid bits about New Haven: the Black Panther affair (in the 70s I think), the Doors song "Peace Frogs" mentions New Haven.
