I'll probably not watch this...

but the ad is amazing!

I'll be there when Scott gets the marrieds!

40 Days...

I'm getting married in 40 days! 40 days!

I'm very excited but I'm also fairly nervous that we haven't done enough-- that being said Ginny's on top of it and in other news our apartment has begun flooding again.

So super awesome exciting things and a lot of water damage. That's what's going on with me!

I think I still owe Jeff a six pack...

So here's the bet: Hand gun deaths in Washington DC during the year 2009 -- I'm setting the over/under at 160. I'll take the over against all comers (who contribute to the blog).

Six pack of beer, winner chooses brand provided I can buy it at a store (no weird international special orders.)

Summer Food Part 1

Two weekends ago I started what I'm hoping will become the Summer of Culinary Excellence. This exciting journey began with a pilgrimage to the Mecca of Lobster Rolls: Red's Eats in Wiscassit, ME.

Red's has been probably been mentioned in any print magazine dealing with food, every television food show ever, and maybe in one or two books written by Steven King. Each lobster roll has about two lobsters crammed into a hotdog roll; a full tail, both claws, and extra lobster to boot. No filler, no mayo, nothing but Lobster (you can get melted butter or mayo on the side). Look at it in all its glory!

I can personally attest that this is the greatest acheivement of mankind. Look at the lobster roll in relation to the size of my head. And this is with one half of a tail already eaten out of it!

Our next installment will deal with BBQ! Nom nom nom.

Anything's Possssssssssiiiiiiiiiiibbbbbbbbbbbllllllleeeeee!!!!!

Oh god this is awesome!

This made me super sad.

Matt's Tea Ocean

I bought more tea yesterday:

China Honey Phoenix Oolong ($25)
Taiwan Wood Drangon Oolong ($11)
Japanese Premium Sencha Okumidori ($22)
Darjeeling Makaibari ($7.50)
Lemon Verbene ($13)
One jar of Gypsy Tears (priceless)

Tim Russert

I am so freaking sick of hearing about Tim Russert- yes he died unexpectedly and that's sad. Yes, he is famous and a colleague of many of the reporters writing about him, so to them its sort of personal... but I am so sick of hearing it about.

I'm also disgusted by the tone of the coverage. Why is he being called a 'great American?' I'm not suggesting he's was a bad American but just because he worked in the political arena he's ipso facto a great American? Isn't this setting the bar kind of low?

And what does it mean to be a great American? I will grant you he probably never passed nuclear secrets to the soviets but is that really where we're setting the bar these days? I understand saying he was a great journalist but I think the honorific of great American should be reserved for War Heroes and Civil Rights Leaders.

Quick Shoutout!

Just sayin'

So...

So I'm thinking of launching a website with the intention of it becoming popular and making money (even if just a few bucks from google ads). I'm thinking that it will be sort of like FARK.com except with a focus on media (TV, Comics, Movies, Music, video games) as well as, well anything we think is freaking sweet (though in my mind I'd like it to have a distinct cool-dork leaning).

Would you guys be willing to help? If you're not familiar check out fark.com, really wouldn't be much work at all to run and if we get it to catch on maybe we make a few bucks.

Anyway, take a look and then lets talk about it.

Oldies but Goodies

So I just went for a run and wanted to puke cause it was so darn hawt out today. And as I was fighting the urge to toss my cookies I heard the sounds of the past flash in my ears. I was seeing sounds and hearing colors. I only run when I am high on PCP.

Well here are the songs from our youth that I heard aka a mix of songs from when we were in middle school. Blanchard Academy WHAT! Like that time that thing happened and we were all like woah and then listened to some ska/punk/grunge. I excluded any Nirvana and Weezer. These are mostly songs that I hope you look at the list and are like oh snap I remember that!

Self - Cannon.
Hum - Stars.
Space - Female of the Species.
K's Choice - Not an Addict.
Green Apple Quick Step - Dizzy.
Spacehog - In the Meantime.
The Refreshments - Banditos.
Nerf Herder - Van Halen.
Tripping Daisy - I got a Girl.
Folk Implosion - Natural One.
Superdrag - Sucked Out.
Geggy Tah - Whoever You Are.
Silverchair - Tomorrow.
Live - All Over You.
Big D and the Kids Table - Jeremy.
Save Ferris - Come On Eileen.
Eagle Eye Cherry - Save Tonight.
Cornorshop - Brimful of Asha

I have more and might be motivated to post a 2nd round when I have another near death experience. ALl the files are on the mydatabus site in a folder called Old Timey Music

Also, leave some song names I might have forgotten!

Project for Jeff

Brew us mead!

All it takes is honey, water and yeast (and I guess pear juice if you like):

Or absinth! It's illegal to buy in USA, but wormwood isn't!

Boo yah!

Cover Me

Ashley and I have been listening to a lot of Bob Dylan lately. A lot of John Lennon too (we got Plastic Ono Band, Mind Games and Double Fantasy recently). All I want to do right now is buy a guitar and play covers of Bob Dylan covers till the break of dawn. The last two Dylan albums I bought are mostly covers:

Bob Dylan:

Favs: In My Time of Dyin', Man of Constant Sorrow, See That My Grave is Kept Clean, Follow You Down, House of the Risin' Sun.

Self-Portrait:

Favs: Like A Rolling Stone, Copper Kettle, The Mighty Quinn, The Boxer, Blue Moon, She Belongs to Me, Wigwam, Alberta #1 and 2.

"In My Time of Dying" (on Bob Dylan) is also covered on this album:

Booyakasha!

I would also like to cover "Popcorn Love" by New Edition as well as Heart's "Magic Man."

PS I also bought the new Weezer album: the first three songs are good and most of the rest sounds like LFO (which may or may not be a good thing for you). "Heart Songs" is basically a list of good songs. Gordon Lightfoot is the first person mentioned in it, and he has some eminently coverable songs (Cf. Nico's version of "I'm Not Saying").

Creative Output

Other than this very hasty picture I just doodled, I haven't really created anything not work related in a while. This includes music, drawings, computer programs, writing, or even adventurous cooking. Basically I haven't been very creative in my spare time. I hope your own endeavors are coming along better than my own, and if they are find a way to post them here.

To get myself back into the swing of things I was considering working on covering some songs and putting together an EP of sorts (2-4 songs). I haven't ever had luck with covers in the past and I wasn't sure why. So I started cycling through some of my favorite songs for candidates and realized that there are songs that should be covered and those that shouldn't be. The cover-friendly variety all seemed to end up being the ones where the production wasn't the star, but instead the melody and lyrics shone. Conversely, the anti-cover songs were mostly perfect sounding and featured rhythm more prominantly. Also songs based around a very specific sounding instrumental riff weren't conducive either.

Looking back I had always tried to cover the wrong group, with songs like the Gap Band - You Dropped a Bomb On Me and Bad Company - Feel Like Making Love. I don't know why I felt the need to share this bit of personal insight, but there it is.

What songs would you cover for your own personal covers album?

Knowing Is Half the Battle

Remember these? I do and these are funny. Maybe you've seen them already...
